Snack Ideas for a Low Carb Diet

By Cloverleaf

If you’re on a low carb diet and feeling hungry in between meal times, then you might find yourself rummaging around your kitchen for a satisfying snack. To avoid the temptation of grabbing a packet of chips or crackers (both of which are very high in carbohydrates), it’s a good idea to have some extra low carb foods to hand. By stocking up your fridge and pantry with some of these low carb snack ideas, you won’t feel guilty if you get the urge for a little snack during the day.

What is a low carb snack?

A low carb snack should contain plenty of fiber, healthy fats and protein. The important thing to remember when looking for a satisfying low carb snack in between meals is to avoid anything that contains bread, pasta, rice, potatoes or other starchy components. Any low carb food can be bulked up and made more nutritious and satisfying by adding an array of colourful vegetables.

Here’s a list of snacks that you can freely indulge in and enjoy as part of a low carb diet:-

  • Devilled Eggs
  • Hard boiled eggs with lettuce and tomato
  • Celery with peanut butter or hummus
  • Cheese sticks, such as string cheese
  • Cucumbers with olive-oil and rice vinegar
  • Dill pickles and cheddar cheese
  • Berries and cottage cheese or plain yoghurt
  • Raw vegetables such as carrot or cauliflower with spinach dip or other low carb dip
  • Brocolli with melted cheese
  • Sunflower Seeds
  • Sugar-Free chocolate Jello pudding
  • Beef Jerky
  • Caprese salad: tomato, mozzarella and fresh basil
  • Deli Meat and cheddar cheese
  • Cheese and apple slices
  • Large mushrooms filled with smoked salmon and cream cheese
  • Ricotta or cottage cheese with flax seeds
  • Lettuce wraps: roll up tuna, egg salad or turkey with veggies in a lettuce leaf
  • Lettuce wraps with chicken and tzatziki sauce
  • Brocolli and melted cheese
  • Nuts, such as plain almonds
  • Sauteed spinach and ricotta cheese spread on cucumber slices
  • Ready-bought low carb snack bars or low carb shakes

A word of warning though: if you choose to buy ready made low carb snack bars or shakes, then you should first read the nutritional information on the package to ensure sure that they provide the right nutrition for your low carb diet. Sometimes, these snack bars are high in salts and sugars which might make them less healthy than low carb foods that you could prepare yourself at home.

Food preparation at home and low carb cooking can be quite easy if you first have a good idea of which foods are actually low in carbohydrates. It’s always good to be creative, too; try putting together your own little low carb snacks based on the suggestions I have given. After all, we should endeavour to make dieting fun without depriving ourselves of delicious and satisfying food that we can all enjoy.

Yum, these sound great. I use Romaine leaves for roll ups a lot. One can make many low calorie and low carb fillings. The cucumbers look amazing too.

Hi there Hyphenbird, I hope you are having a great Friday evening.

Lettuce makes a nice versatile alternative to bread sometimes, doesn't it? Super crunchy, too. I really like butter lettuce because it lasts in the fridge a long time and I can just pick off a leaf or two when I want it.

Have a wonderful weekend :-)

This is a wonderful "rebuttle" to my latest hub on "mindless eating" (written in jest, as I am totally in to health food). Having said that, I have been trying to come up with a no-carb, or at least low carb snack. I am thrilled to find your "tuna wrap" as I like tuna so much.

Excellent hub, cloverleaf. So thrilled to have found you here on HP. And your mom, is no slouch, either . I'm a huge fan of hers!

Hi Rosemay, the nice thing about this list is that you can mix and match, too! For example you could try filling mushrooms with brocolli and melted cheese.

Have fun experimenting and thanks as always for the vote up :-)

I'm thrilled to have found you here on HubPages, too! MM and I are keenly following you.... especially in your new challenge!

Mmm... great- and delicious- food suggestions! These are some of my favorite snacks, and I'm not watching carbs at all!

Cloverleaf profile image

Cloverleaf Hub Author 8 months ago

Hi Simone, yes and not an onion ring or donut in sight! I can appreciate that as a vegetarian there would be a few snack ideas that would not appeal to you but I'm happy that there are some on the list that you can enjoy!

All the best,

Cloverleaf.

Would peanut butter and celery work? Ricotta cheese is a good base to mix a tablespoon of concentrated juice into for a refreshing pick me up too. It's even good with a little lemon jest. Lots of good choices you have offered for healthy eating.

Cloverleaf profile image

Cloverleaf Hub Author 8 months ago

Hi homesteadbound,

Yep, peanut butter and celery is a great low-carb snack. I love your idea about mixing juice or lemon with ricotta because it is rather bland and boring on it's own. You always have the greatest ideas!

If trying to lose weight, definitely avoid the ranch dressing with your carrots and celery. The eggs are a great idea without too much mayo. If you can eat the hardboiled eggs plain with some light salt, it's almost pure protein. Voted up and USEFUL. :) Nice hub Louise.

Cloverleaf profile image

Cloverleaf Hub Author 8 months ago

Oh Felicity, that's so true. I'm a big sucker for ranch dressing and mayo LOL. Tzatziki sauce is actually quite a nice alternative too, especially if you are watching the fat content. Thanks for all your great remarks, and for voting up.

I am glad I came across this hub of yours. Very soon (maybe even tomorrow) I am going to start a lower carb diet and all these snack ideas are great. I think I will do a lot of the preparing/chopping ahead of time so I always have a ready-to-go low carb snack. I appreciate the ideas.
