If, like me, you love to talk a lot but hate those hefty cell phone bills, then you’ll want to follow these few practical steps to SIGNIFICANTLY reduce your cell phone bills every month and save money!

This strategy is perfect if you make a lot of local or long distance calls. You can practically eliminate the need for a landline and make all of your calls from your cell phone, any time of the day or night. Chat with relatives in another country without worrying about the cost! Keep in touch while driving to work or walking in the park. Call your Customers while you’re on the go and build relationships without clocking up a scary bill.

By just following these FIVE simple steps you will be on the road to saving significant money on your cell phone bills.

Rate Plan

Sign up for a very basic rate plan with a quality airtime provider such as Telus or Rogers.  You only need a tiny amount of local airtime included (100 minutes should suffice).  You must ensure (and this is the key to this money saving strategy) that your plan includes a feature such as a “calling circle”, “favourite five”, or something similar that allows you to make unlimited calls to at least one local number.

Handset

You don’t need a fancy handset if the majority of your communication is done via talk and text. I use a basic Motorola flip phone and it does the job just fine! It didn’t cost me a penny when I signed up for my Rate Plan.

Long Distance Card

Buy a good quality long distance card online.  My favourite is fonebusterflat which I get from www.thephonecardstore.ca and you can spend as little as $5 to try this out.  It allows me to make all the calls I need for just 1.8c per minute!   They will email you with a local access phone number, a pin, and a toll free number to access your account when you’re not in your local area.

Local Number = My Fave

Now, here’s the fun part!  Set one of the numbers in your free calling circle to be the local access number sent to you.  Whenever you dial this number locally from your cell phone, you will be connected for free to your long distance card.  Now you can dial practically anywhere in the world for a tiny fraction of the cost.

Automate It!

Now I agree, there are a few more numbers to dial when you’re making a call through a long distance card.  The great thing about the Motorola flip phone, and practically all good phones out there, is that a sequence of numbers can easily be stored,  with pauses inserted, and accessed quickly via speed dial.  For example, calling your friend in the United Kingdom might mean that you would store the number as follows: Local Access Number (Free because it’s one of your Favourites), P (Pause), 1, (press one for English), P(Pause), PIN Number, P(Pause), Friend’s phone number in the UK.  Store into you Speed Dial and for quick access to low-cost calling any time of the day or night!

unfortunately I am addicted to mostly text and internet usage on my cell phone, rarely use it for talk anymore. But still for those that have family overseas very useful info!

That's a great point nycgrl, thank you for your comment. It's also useful if you do not have (or want to get) a landline; this way you can make all your calls locally for a fraction of the cost using your cell phone.

Yes, cell phone bills can be expensive. We have a trac phone with a prepaid card that gives us 100 minutes for 3 months. We use it when we are traveling long distances, especially if we're meeting someone somewhere, or if we have car problems. Our home phone is included in our internet and cable bill.
