How to Backup Your Computer Hard Drive
By Cloverleaf
Why is it important to backup your computer hard drive?
Losing valuable data on our computer hard drive can be extremely frustrating - and costly! Think about all the important files on your computer: your precious photographs, business spreadsheets, tax files, and now imagine how devastated you would be if your PC crashed tomorrow and all of your valuable data was lost. It doesn't bear thinking about, does it?
As much as we rely on our computer technology, the sad truth is that unless we think ahead of time and protect our files from such an unforeseen circumstance, we risk losing it all.
By learning how to regularly perform a computer backup, and how to restore the hard drive if the unthinkable happens, you won't have to worry about losing all your important documents and valuable memories.
What is disk cloning?
One of the most effective drive backup techniques to use is disk cloning. Disk cloning is essentially a method that is commonly used to backup and restore Windows, applications and files. You might very well want to consider disk cloning as a preventative measure, especially if your PC is suffering significant performance problems. You shouldn’t have to worry about losing important information on your computer hard drive.
One of the ways that disk cloning works is by simply copying the entire computer hard drive and then saving the contents as a disk image file. The disk image file can then be moved safely to a partition (simply an area of divided storage space where data can be stored separately from the main hard drive) or even to a removable device such as a USB drive or DVD. By backing up your files to a removable device, you have the freedom to restore all the information to any computer in any location, or even upload them to a remote server.
The interesting thing about a disk image file is that it can be broken up into many partition image files, which allows you to pick and choose which part, or parts, of the backup you wish to restore or transfer.
Common reasons for disk cloning
- Backing up computer hard drive
- Recovering complete system to an original configuration
- Preparing new computers for sale
- Rebooting and refreshing public computers
- Wiping personal data and restoring system to original configuration
- Transferring data to another user
- Upgrading your hard drive
How to clone a disk to backup your computer hard drive
Thankfully, disk cloning to backup your computer hard drive doesn’t have to be confusing or daunting! There is some great disk cloning software available that will perform the tasks of drive backup and restoration easily and effectively without the need for you to worry about backing up files manually.
Make backup and recovery of Windows, and your applications and files, simple!
PC disk tools will backup your computer hard drive and will make an image file or a partition to another drive as described above. If your computer hard drive is large then it is possible to back it up to a smaller drive, or vice versa. The compression of the backup is very flexible to the media you wish to transfer it to. The software will also create a Windows boot disk for you; this is a very valuable tool if you need to reboot Windows to get your PC up and running again. Not only are PC disk tools effective for backing up and restoring your hard drive, they are also very useful for moving data from one computer to another, for example if you have bought a new PC and wish to transfer all the files across very easily.

Hi thejeffriestube,
It's certainly better to be safe than sorry when it comes to protecting important files. Thanks for coming by to read and comment on my hub!

Thanks for the reminder. My old Dell that i'm using right now failed twice and I lost so many photo's.
All my stories and poems are on a flash drive so they're safe. Now i'm going to back up my photos. Thank you Cloverfield.
Good for you, writer20! You definitely want to protect all those beautiful poems and stories you have written, it would be heartbreaking to lose those!

Very good hub. I may have to show this to my husband for his consideration. We currently use a subscription back up service that just backs every thing up while I am working. It really works great.
I have lost a computer before that I had not backed up, and it was very heart breaking, especially the pictures.
Hi homesteadbound,
The same thing happened to me a few years ago and I lost a lot of pictures. Your subscription backup service sounds like a decent solution too, although is it very expensive?

Your Hubs are well thought out, interesting and informative. I look forward to them and this one did not let me down. I learned a lot here!
Hello Hyph, thank you for being so supportive! I'm glad the info was useful :-)
All the best,
Cloverleaf.
Hi Clover! Great info about computer back ups. I should look into this but I think the disc drive on our computer needs the doctor first. I have a great computer tech across the street, so I'll have to ask him.
Backing up your computer always seems like a waste of time task, but if something god forbid happens to your computer, you will be so happy you did it! UP UP UP and useful. :)
Hi Susie,
Uh-oh your computer doesn't sound well at all. I hope it doesn't turn out to be anything too serious!

Hi Felicity,
What would I do without you? You've hit the nail on the head here! Backing up our computer isn't the most exciting topic in the world but it sure helps us to keep our sanity!

I learned the hard way, (losing all my data and photos) not once, but twice, that every word in your hub is a top priority. I love being reminded! And I love your amazing hubs. I bookmark every one of them.
I will post this one on facebook and twitter. Also, voting up! Great article.
Hi Audrey,
You must have been devastated, losing such precious photos. Well, at least you won't let that happen again, I'm glad I could be of service :-) Thanks for your awesome comments and for sharing and voting up, you are one in a million!!!!
Have an excellent weekend,
Cloverleaf.
I frequently back up my photos and always save extra copies of important files. When I taught, I backed up all of my files once a year or so (and really should have more often). I've been fortunate never to lose photos!
Hi randomcreative,
You have a great system there, frequently backing up your files. Losing photos is very upsetting! Thanks for coming by to read and comment :-)
