Eating Less Bread and Pasta on a Low Carb Diet
71
Whenever I need to lose I few pounds, I always look to reduce my intake of carbohydrates, such as bread, pasta, potatoes, rice and grains, and this usually makes a huge impact on my weight in quite a short space of time.
The problem is that I absolutely love carbohydrates, particularly bread and pasta! As some of you know, I make a lot of my own french bread at home from scratch, and the Olive Garden happens to be one of my favorite restaurants. But I am my own worst enemy because when I eat bread I like to smother it with butter and when I eat pasta I ultimately have to cover it with a pound of cheese. Not good!
But if I just reduce the amount of bread and pasta that I consume on a daily basis then it’s a win-win situation because in doing so I also reduce my fat intake as well by eating less butter and cheese. I stress the word reduce though; eliminating carbs altogether from our diets is not wise, as I found out a few years ago.
I tried a low carb diet whereby I literally eliminated all carbohydrates altogether. I completely cut out the two biggest food passions in my life, bread and pasta, as well as potatoes, rice, grains and other starchy foods. For two weeks, I ate nothing but meat, fruit and vegetables. Now, while I did lose about 8 pounds over these two weeks, having zero carbs left me feeling rather faint, weak and lightheaded. I would caution anyone looking to eliminate carbohydrates from their diet altogether because carbohydrates are a very important source of fibre, which helps maintain blood sugar, reduces cholesterol, and supports good bowel function.
Now I'm a big believer that some carbohydrates are really essential in our every day diets and so that’s why a low carb diet is the better option for losing weight steadily and maintaining good health.
So whenever I’m thinking about reducing the amount of bread and pasta in my diet to lose a few pounds, or just to keep down to my ideal weight and feel healthier, I follow my own low carb tips to keep my diet fun and interesting without missing out completely on the foods I enjoy.
My 2 Best Low Carb Tips
- Eating less bread on a low carb diet: When making a sandwich, I might use only one slice of bread instead of two, and then load up with more low carb fillings such as turkey and salad. This way I am not denying myself the bread I enjoy or the carbohydrates that my body needs, but I have succeeded in significantly lowering my carb intake.
- Eating less pasta on a low carb diet: If I have big craving for pasta then I sometimes trick my body into thinking I’m having a big bowl of spaghetti by instead having a hearty serving of nutritious spaghetti squash! With only 10 carbs in a 1-cup serving of cooked spaghetti squash, this vegetable is an excellent addition to any low carb diet and a tasty alternative to pasta.

I am a huge carb lover myself and love, love, love pasta. I also like basmati and jasmine rice and whole grain bread. What I have discovered is that I can satisfied with less pasta and whole grain pasta if it is sauteed with lots of fresh veggies and complemented with just a bit of grated parmesan. I'm going to have to try the mashed cauliflower, because I love it. Califlower is also great roasted with tumeric on it. I've found that roasting vegetables makes them creamy and sweet tasting without the addition of any oil (although a smattering of olive oil makes almost everything better).
Being on a low carb diet can be difficult but the results can be amazing! Thanks for this detailed hub :)
I too am a bread lover, although I don't eat that much UNLESS we go to Olive Garden or Red Lobster. I love Red Lobster's garlic bisquits! Forget it, I'll never quit eating pasta. You can buy whole wheat pasta nowadays, so I do this once in a while. Nice hub, Clover.
Carbs, oh my beloved carbs. could it be that I could live without thee? No, I didn't think so.
Cloverleaf you have some great hints here. Everything in moderation I suppose for this girl.
Hi Cloverleaf! Great hub! I am a proponent of the low carb diet. It has helped me out tremendously in the past. It can be difficult, but it is rewarding. Voted up, up and away!
Hi Cloverleaf, what a great idea to make a one slice of bread sandwich!
I like amazingchild's idea of mashed cauliflower instead of potato as well.
Great hub and useful tips, many thanks for sharing and voting up x
Hi cloverleaf....bread and melted butter...yummy in my tummy! Cutting back on carbs is beneficial, everything in moderation :-))
There are low carb breads out now that only have 4 carbs per slice (and the best part, the bread still tastes good), as well as Dreamfields pasta is low carb too. But, I definitely like spaghetti squash - as well as getting another serving of veggie so that works! [voted up and useful]

Great advices Cloverleaf! I dont believe in taking away all carb in our diet either. We still need some in order to feel good. But most of us eat too much of this tasty carbohydrate food:)) Voted up,
Tina
I know we should not be eating bread, pasta, potatoes and rice when dieting, but those things are so darn yummy. Less, I can do. I like your idea of 1 piece of bread instead of 2. Up and Useful.
Oh how I love my toast! I wake up for that toasty slice of bread with just a little yogurt butter and some strawberry preserves. Doesn't that sound good? I can go without potatoes and pasta and even rice...but not bread.
Great hub Louise. Funny I ran in to this because I have been thinking about cutting back on carbs (a little). Voted up and thanks!

Great tips. I'm a proponent of the low carb diet, though in my case, it was no-carb (paleo). I lost 30 pounds on it and kept it off. Voting this Up and Useful.

Great tips! I also like eating mashed cauliflower instead of mashed potatoes. Also, there are some great products to try like "Bagel thins" that give you that bagel taste with half the carbs because they are just thinner versions.
