How to Make Drinking Water More Interesting
77
Water is a basic necessary requirement in our daily diets.
Our bodies are made up of almost 60% water and so if we don’t drink enough every day to replenish ourselves then we can become dehydrated. Drinking enough water is also vital to ensure that our kidneys function correctly to flush out toxins and waste.
But I do find that plain old water can be boring, and I have a hard time drinking the minimum recommended water intake of 8-12 cups per day. I am always looking for ways to make water more interesting!

Thankfully, we don’t have to restrict ourselves to drinking 8-12 cups per day of uninteresting, tepid tap water. There are plenty of ways that we can get our daily fluid requirements without having to sacrifice taste. However, substituting water for cans of soda or other sugary drinks does not make for a healthy alternative and so when looking to make water more interesting it is a good idea to find ways of adding a little nutritional value as well. There is lots of water available naturally in the fruits and vegetables we consume every day; drinking fruit juice is one way to help get the fluid intake we need. Be careful though. Although drinking fruit juice is of nutritional benefit to the body, juice alone is high in sugar and calories.
Instead, let’s look at how water can be made more interesting by adding a burst of flavour, and perhaps some nutritional value. There are many brands of bottled water available now that are packed with extra vitamins and minerals for added health benefits. The downside to buying bottles of vitamin water, however, is that they can be quite expensive. If you are choosing store bought vitamin water, then do pay attention to the sugar and calorie content; there are some delicious vitamin waters available that contain 10 calories or less and come in a variety of delicious fruit flavours.
Above all, the easiest and most inexpensive way to make water more interesting is to add some natural flavouring to the tap or filtered water available in your own home. Dressing up your own readily available water is by far the most inexpensive (and fun) way of making water so much more interesting! Here are some of my personal favourites:-
1) Green Tea Delight - Brew a nice cup of decaffeinated herbal tea and add a squeeze of lemon for extra flavour. If you prefer a cool drink, allow the herbal tea to cool, pour it over a glass of ice, and then add the squeeze of lemon as a final touch.
2) Very Berry – Blackberries and blueberries are packed with antioxidants and bursting with sweet flavour, plus they just love soaking up water! Add a small handful of these berries to a large jug of water and mash a few to the sides of the jug as you stir. Keep the jug in the fridge and reach for the cool, fruity water all day long.
3) Mint and Lime – Think of it as an alcohol-free Mojito! Just crush a few pieces of mint into a tall glass of ice water, add a squeeze of lime and a lime slice for decoration. So refreshing and zingy, this water is a welcome treat on a hot summer’s day.
4) Honey and Orange – The delicious sweetness of honey not only makes water sweeter and more exciting, but it has many nutritional and antibiotic properties as well. Pour boiling water into a cup or mug and stir in teaspoon of runny honey. Squeeze in a little fresh orange juice and float a slice of orange over the top to add a citrus zing with an added boost of Vitamin C.
5) Spa Treatment – Many spas and salons add cucumber to water for a refreshing beverage that soothes the soul and goes a long way to help you feel “healthy”. Simply add to a jug of water some thin slices of cucumber, together with a squeeze of lemon juice and a pinch of salt to bring out all the flavours.
When thinking about some natural ways to make water more interesting, the possibilities are simply endless! How many other ways can you think of to liven up your 8-12 cups per day?

Cucumber water is delicious! I first had it at a hotel breakfast buffet. I love water with lemon, too.
I quite like just plain water but there are some interesting ideas here. voted up and stuff
You are a lover of honey, I can tell! Thanks for all the "goodies" you've been sharing with us lately. Beautiful hub!
Okay, Clover, now what exactly does that mean??? lol (:
I never really liked 'flavored' water, although I do drink the green tea. Thanks for sharing. :)
Sorry, I didn't mean to sound sarcastic. I was kidding. Yes, we seem to have the same mindset when it comes to hubbing. I wrote an article about water awhile ago too...and nutrition!!
Hi Cloverleaf, I drink lots of water and find it boring, these are some great ideas to liven it up a bit, I had never thought about dropping some fruit in it, great idea!
Nice post you have here, I drink lots of water and have got used to the taste. But I prefer drinking buttermilk or lime juice instead.
Have you ever tried tried drinking buttermilk instead of water? Take half a cup of beaten fresh curds, add a little salt to your taste plus two or three small bits of ginger and green chillies. Mix it up and add one glass of plain water to that.
Whisk well with a hand beater. adjust salt if you like. This type of Buttermilk is a nice and healthy thirst quencher and very nutritious too.
You have a load of nice ideas on making water more palatable.
My kids love their water with sweetened ice cubes of various flavours like orange, lemon, tangerine, vanilla, strawberry and others.
I love fresh crushed lemon leaves in my water. Good share
I drink green teas daily but I haven't really drank much colored water. You do have some interesting suggestions.
I don't drink nearly as much as I should do. Water seems so plain and boring, but I will give the "Very Berry" a go. It sounds delicious and refreshing, so I shouldn't have any problem reaching my 10 cups per day! Thanks for sharing your ideas.
Thanks for the hub, interesting read!
there are endless possibilities on what you can infuse to your water to make it interesting but my favorite is the cucumber water. beautiful hub.

Thank you so much for linking my Hub to yours! I'll do the same because this article is truly brilliant, and very relevant to my article!
Great tips Cloverleaf. Useful and creative tips to use water. Great playful article.
Never thought that water can be so interesting and tasty after reading your hub. Will definitely try it out.
Great hub on water. We have a well 108 feet deep and the water is so pure not even a filter is needed. Water is by far the best beverage but sometimes a little flavor ain't so bad, I do like my Liptons with a slice of lemon.
Water is very important for us. I actually like using the Mio stuff that's out there to add flavor to my water.
water with ice + lemon + a little bit of sugar is what i like the most and drink it 2 times a day . Great hub anyways .
I like adding a squeeze of lemon, orange, or to drop in a frozen strawberry or other fruit. And I love cucumber slices in water. So refreshing!
Thank you Cloverleaf for sharing these new ways to make drinking water more enjoyable! I love drinking water so trying these will not be difficult at all. I have voted your hub useful. Thank you for sharing!
I tried someones cucumber soup and loved it, I will now try your cucumber tea. Very interesting and I do love cucumber and as I always remind people, cucumber lowers cholesterol! Have tried most if not all your other suggestions because I am one person who has a hard time drinking water, although I loved it as a kid, now knowing there is no way we can get it really pure, or so I read, with hormones from birth control pills they can't kill out; being in our water supply and it is claimed store water is the very same. I have a water plant within 30 miles of me and we have gone by it a time or too and it smells more like a sewer plant, which literally it is. But that is another story...and we all must have water, regardless, so great hub of ways to make it better!
These are some good ideas, way better than just stirring in a package of kool-aid ;)
I heard that this is how some of the big "flavored water" companies got their start-- by mixing fruits and other flavors into water to discourage their kids from drinking soft drinks. Voted up and useful.
As usual clover an informative hub and tasty info keep it up!
Great hub Cloverleaf! thanks for sharing:-)

Adding cucumber or orange to my glass of water wouldn't even have crossed my mind, I'll be sure to try them now though. Thank you.
I like these ideas Louise. I drink water alot now and while I know it's good for me, it gets old after awhile. And these ways spice up water without adding unnecessary surgar and calories. Great hub!
Yum, yum! I like to make a calorieless energy drink with vinegar, stevia, baking soda and pumpkin pie spice. It's not half bad. But, I agree - it's hard to just drink water all the time. Voted up and SHARED.
These are great ideas for bring back more water in your life. Its easier drinking water at work when we have schedules breaks. However, at home its even more difficult. I do agree that we should not resort to drinking sugary drinks that are not from concentrate. These antioxidants and healthy flavoured water drinks are a very helpful. The required intake of water is definitely very difficult to maintain especially if you have a small bladder. Great hub. Voted up.
Many years ago, I discovered the hard way that drinking soda can actually dehydrate you. I was doing daycare and one of the little girls I was watching ended up in the hospital for dehydration. Her mother couldn't understand, since she had seven to ten sodas per day...but no water.
I am always looking for ways to improve my water. I have kidney issues and must drink at least 8-10 glasses of water each day. I have tried many of the suggestions before, but hadn't thought of adding cucumbers or orange slices...
Voted up and SHARING!
Drinking enough water seems to be a concern for people today. What is in the water we have to drink is also a big concern. I like to filter my water and then add a little lemon juice but now will try some fruit. Thank you for sharing this information.

I drink a lot of water and sometimes like you get bored with it, then I get a lemonade gatorade which also handles my peckish tummy until dinner.
